So I'm thinking about heading down to pacific raceways on saturday for a track day, just wondering how my gearing will be for the track. I bought my track bike already geared for mission, I'm not sure what i have in the front, but i know I have a 51 in the back. I haven't changed a sprocket before, just wondering if it's really needed, and if so, how hard it is? thanks.
PR gearing is basically stock. It can be done with Mission gearing, I've done it before. but..you'll be in 6th on the limiter before you even hit halfway down the straight. Last time I went just changed the rear sprocket in the morning before the first session with what I had lying around, I think it was a 46 tooth rear.. to change your gearing it's something like this: front sprocket, remove the cover and possibly the shift rod. put the bike in neutral and put a two by four through the wheel and the swingarm so the wheel can't move and then remove the sprocket nut... this can be on there tight, so a breaker bar may be required. for the rear sprocket put the bike in gear and undo all the rear sprocket bolts. then pull the rear tire, remove the nuts from and remove the sprocket. install is the reverse. You can be limited to what gearing you might want by your chain length, since you'd be going back to stock the rear sprocket will be smaller so you'll have to adjust the chain to take up the slack.
