Just wondering about the exhaust rules for Formula Classic. Can aftermarket mufflers be used on the old bikes if they are quiet? It's difficult to find stock exhaust to fit on some older bikes. I found a two into two F1 muffler set for cheap so thought I'd check if it was allowed.

After market exhausts are allowed as long as they're below 88db. What bike are you thinking of running?

If you bring it you can run.

(Provided you pass tech and keep it quiet.)

    With apologies to Kevin Costner

I hate to rain on anyones parade, but it would seem that anything 750cc and under must run some form of stock mufler....

    from the 2012 rulebook...
8.25 Aftermarket racing exhaust systems are not allowed on 750cc and under Multi cylinder machines.

Of course it will depend on what bike configuration you run.... twin vs inline 4 cyl.

Pretty dry over here Jayson, if you look at chapter 11 in the 2012 rulebook "Any machine not obviously qualified to compete may be allowed at the discretion of the Formula Classic Rider Representative." This includes aftermarket exhausts. So bring yer ol bikes down, cherry or P.O.S, and keep it below 88.

The EX500 is a parallel twin, and as such, not subject to the stock muffler rule, which only applies to triples and inline-4s from 600cc to 750cc. All others can run aftermarket exhaust, but still must be below 88db.

Well, well, well... Hot topic so i'm thinking i'd better clear some things up.

If your bike is pre 1990's (or falls under model continuation rules, or we as a collective say it's ok) these are the ONLY rules that apply:

    1. You must be under 88dB's
    2. Your bike has to be mechanically sound (pass tech)
    3. Your bike has to be properly safety wired (again, pass tech)
    4. You must have an oil catch pan (we've been here before, pass tech)

Apart from that, there are NO other rules.

If you have a classic bike, and ride in the Formula Classic group, you become part of a family of like minded folks who:

    1. Love riding and wrenching on old bikes.
    2. Like cheap racing
    4. Get excited rubbing elbows with other like minded folks, regardless of your lap times
    5. Help each other out in times of need
    6. Pit close to each other
    7. We tell everyone and anyone that will listen about our 'family' and try to grow our group.

We are a family, but when the flags drops we race. When the checkered flag comes out we're a family again...

We come back year after year with our old bikes and repeat the cycle. And our numbers are growing.

We're self governed when it comes to rules, we have our own trophies, and we have a rider rep (me) that is our voice within the club.

Any more questions? Didn't think so....

    Cheers
    alex

No Alex, the exhaust rules override everything else.

Yes it does. I am in full agreement. Section 11.3 (which pertains to our bikes) states:

EXHAUSTS: Must have a mechanical baffle installed, no open racing exhaust allowed. May be stock or aftermarket but exhaust sound levels must not be greater than 88 Db measured at track side. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS!

    I read this as...

I can go to the store, buy a rubber chicken, install a mechanical baffle inside the sucker, attach it to the end of the stinger so it passes tech, and if it's under 88 dB's, I have a legal (and funky) exhaust..

You must have never seen Georgie G's fluffy bunny exhaust! I kid you not...it looked like he just strapped some large bunnies to the end of the stingers.. We have pictures, and this thing was on the track...

Jayson and others are quoting 8.25 which is Supersport, a class that apparently is not fluffy bunny friendly...

Again, I am glad we are both in agreement that our 11.3 rule overrides everything else when it comes to old bike exhausts!

    The 'Fluffy Bunny" exhaust system...

Perfectly legal according to rule 11.3! (you can click to enlarge should you wish to see it up-close)

Just wanted to post up a huge THANKS for making a newbie's first race weekend such an awesome experience!! I passed the WCSS course on Saturday and took part in the F.Classics race on Sunday.

Special shout-out to Alex and Tony for taking me under their wings and providing a ton of support, advice and encouragement -- I hope you know how much I appreciate it, as I couldn't have done it without you!

It was also great to meet Andre, Reiner (sp?), George and Patrick Visser - a really cool bunch of people in a really cool Class :)

I hope I was reasonably predictable out there and didn't screw up anyone's racing lines etc.

Looking forward to progressing as a rider and seeing you folks at the next events.

    Cheers,

    Dan (CB-1 #858)
