I am thinking of adding color to my BMW rims for next year. Why would I paint my rims? Why would I powder coat my rims? I'm looking to compare reasons to either paint or powder coat them.

paint will chip and come off easily. You will be constantly painting them. Powder coat does not come off easily. My powder coated rims are excellent and have never needed touch ups. Jayson Lynch painted his rims and was constantly repainting.

Does the powder coating hide possible cracks in the rim?

It can, but so will paint for a while too. With powder coat though, you have to get the rim walnut blasted to clean it off. I did mine at Rainbow by Ikea in Coquitlam. There is a blasting place next door, so it's really convenient. He also makes sure to bake his stuff properly, and you can tell. He plugs all the holes, which is good, but forgot to tape the part of the rim for the brake carrier, making the brake disk area slightly larger. I know the coating is really good because it was a total bitch to try to sand down.
