    From Inside Motorcycles:

Brett McCormick will spend the night under observation in the local Assen hospital following his crash in race two of today?s eni Superbike World Championship round at Assen. The reigning Canadian Superbike number one plate holder was involved in an incident mid-race with Althea Ducati rider Carlos Checa and tumbled across the run off in turn 12, getting hit along the way by his own Ducati 1098R. McCormick was in 11th position at the time, while World Champ Checa was a lap down, having pitted to change to dry tires in the changeable conditions.

He was lucky and will be making a full and speedy recovery. I would like to thank Shoei and Alpinestars for doing an awesome job and keepimg this from being much worse. -Grant.

Yeah that looked nasty. I thought for sure he was hospital bound after that. Too bad, he was having a great race. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

    New Update from Brett's Dad

"We are still at Assen hospital, but Brett will be able to transport in a day or two. We will then travel to Italy and/or home to Canada. If Brett requires surgery it will be at that time.
He's in good spirits and Lucca (engineer) is with us.
Thanks again for all the positive support! Brett really appreciates it!!!"

Heal fast and easy Brett! You were really moving out there, so I'd like to see a full recovery and have you racing again!

    New Update:

Brett McCormick, who suffered a tremendous crash during the World Superbike Championship in Assen, Netherlands during Sunday?s race, remains in hospital in the Netherlands but is expected to make a full recovery and expects to return home soon.

The Saskatoon native spoke live with CBC Radio Saskatchewan this morning and acknowledged that he?s not feeling too bad, but the pain is setting in. He explained that he broke the C5 vertebrae in his neck, which is ?pretty scary to break?, but was lucky and the break was stable, with no nerve damage. Brett explained that he also had a few cracked vertebrae in his mid back.

While he doesn?t recall much of what happened following the crash, Brett does remember getting pushed wide following a pass from Carlos Checa in less than ideal conditions on a damp racetrack. He hit the wet pavement on the outside of the racetrack and was thrown off his Ducati 1098R.

Brett?s father and crew chief are with him in Assen and are waiting to hear when Brett can be moved in the coming days. Brett is expected to make a full recovery and plans to be back on the motorcycle as soon as possible, ?I?d ride today if I could.?

    Latest Update

Injured reigning Canadian Superbike Champion Brett McCormick of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan plans to head home to the Prairies in the next few days. McCormick suffered a variety of physical issues, including a spinal fracture, in the second race at the third round of the 2012 eni Superbike World Championship at Assen in the Netherlands last Sunday, April 22.

Twenty year old McCormick remains in hospital near the circuit, and the good news is that medical specialists do not expect neck surgery to be required. While his broken vertebrae are a very serious injury, his specific case is not too threatening. His broken right thumb was set and casted on Sunday night shortly after the incident.

Brett?s father Grant is with his son in the Netherlands, and explained via telephone that their short term plans involved getting Brett back to home in Canada (he was living in Italy for the SBK season), probably in the next couple of days. After his transfer to Canada, McCormick is likely to spend a couple of days in Saskatoon hospital while his local specialists review his condition.

Grant McCormick confirmed that Brett is certainly uncomfortable and restless, but has been allowed to get up and walk around inside the hospital.

While it is impossible to place a guaranteed, specific timeframe of McCormick?s recovery schedule, a best guess would suggest a return to the SBK tour in around three months time, perhaps for the Brno round in the Czech Republic, July 22. The Czech race is considered a home event for much of the Effenbert squad.

I saw an update on FB today and he is at home, had his thumb operated on yesterday and apparently the neck isn't as bad as originally thought.

He hopes to be training before long and then back on the bike within 2 months.
